Sustainable Development: Possible solutions
Erasmus+ KA229 project started in September 2020 and was prolonged to 3 years due to the Covid lockdowns. Five schools from France, Finland, Portugal, Greece and Czechia studied sustainable development of energy in their countries and organized international meetings for their students.
Ostrava meeting - October 2022
Meeting in Ostrava was held from October 3 to October 7.
19 students and 8 teachers arrived.
Program:
Sunday: Arrival to Ostrava
Monday: Welcome in school, school tour, workshops and presentations classes, openning concert, meeting with city representatives in the Ostrava Town Hall, city center tour
Tuesday: Interactive Science Museum in preserved area Lower Vitkovice, Leaning Church in Karvina, Hrabůvka Heap
Wednesday: candle factory UNIPAR in Rožnov excursion, Pustevny mountains
Thursday: thermal power station Třebovice excursion, Landek mining museum, farewell party
Friday: lecture endangered animals in the Ostrava ZOO, country presentations, evaluation
Saturday: departure

Evaluation: we prepared a questionnairy before the meeting and after the meeting in order to be able to compare progress in the knowledge and attitudes to influence of industry on environment in the Ostrava surroundings.

Meeting report
Before the exchange, teachers prepared activities related to the meeting in Czechia. Czech teachers & students visited the planned venues. Due to the change of the meeting date, they had to replace the visit to Museum in Rožnov - Water Mill Valley with the excursion to a candle factory UNIPAR. Teachers prepared a questionnaire for participants to find out how much they already know about the planned activities.
All teams prepared a presentation of their country, town & school. During the exchange, all visiting students were accommodated in families & worked in mixed international teams with all other involved countries o given tasks such as video making & discussing problems connected with the heavy industry & mining & their influence on nature. There were 5 main activities related to the topic.
The week’s program was the following:
2/10: arrival/welcome by host families
3/10: Monday: welcome in the hosting school, school tour, teams visit classes & present their countries or take part in the lesson or workshop, welcome ceremony with short cultural program prepared by hosting school (20 members of school choir, 8 of folklore dance group, 120 as audience, 10 teachers, guests: 19 students, 8 teachers). Ice-breaking activing & learning a Czech traditional dance. Visit of the Ostrava town hall & watch tower, meeting city representatives & discuss about the project. Video from the first day.
4/10: Tuesday: Visit of the Science & Technology Museum U6 in preserved area Lower Vítkovice & learning about the tradition of iron & steel production, visit to the leaning church in Karviná & about the consequences of the coal mining in the Ostrava-Karviná area. Visit of the Heap Hrabová, water test of the lake created during the land reclamation.
5/10: Wednesday: excursion in the Candle Factory UNIPAR in Rožnov, participants learnt facts about the environmentally friendly hand production of candles & could decorate their own candle. A walk around protected landscape area at Pustevny, learning about biodiversity, especially trees & looking for bark beetle & acid rains, & climate change damages. Observing architecture of wooden houses which represents the traditional style of housing. Stop at the Ostravice & Ondřejnice Rivers in Frýdlant pod Ondřejníkem & taking water test.
6/10: Thursday: Excursion to Třebovice Coal Thermal Power Plant, learning about the production of electric energy & measures taken to reduce impact on environment, walk around the plant & observing nature. Visit of the Mining Museum in Petřkovice under the Landek Hill & learning about the history of black coal excavation in Ostrava region, going under the ground of former mine Anselm & observing machinery used in various types of mines. Farwell party for participants & coordinators´ meeting.
7/10: Friday: educational program in Ostrava ZOO – learning about ZOO involvement in saving endangered specious & proper treating of animals, comparing different needs of animals for life. Presentations of countries & closing ceremony, handing out certificates. Evaluation questionnaires.
Participants developed their communication and interpersonal skills and ability to present their work. They improved their ability cooperate in international teams. They benefited from the activities by acquiring new knowledge related to energy and influence of heavy industry and mines on environment. They learnt about the Czech culture and traditions, lifestyle and habits and developed cultural awareness and intercultural competence. The results also were: presentations of schools, towns, and countries, results obtained in the activities, recordings of activities, feedback forms, evaluation sheets, certificates. Besides, we believe there was improvement in students’: team work skills, development of communication and interpersonal skills, cultural awareness. At the level of the teachers, we improved their competence in dealing with multicultural groups of students and their teaching skills.
