Project description:

Pupils will identify problems caused by diversities and look for ways how to make the best of it. We will organize a topical day, organized by each school to get students acquainted with the project. Then students from different countries will work jointly on an international “diversity textbook” which will inform about diversity through presentations or videos etc, worksheets and activities for pupils. In all parts of the project students will be involved. They will also be the first learners. Finally we will organize a one-week meeting; participants will work on the textbook. We will meet in Bulgaria and then go to Croatia.

Project idea:

The main aim is to show that diversity has positive aspects. Pupils will write an international textbook about diversity and the major problems connected with it. In all parts of the process of creating this textbook, pupils will be involved. They will think about problems globally and learn that different does not mean bad. Units will have ice breakers, introduction of the problem through presentation or a short video etc. Activities will be going from visible to inner problems, from discussions about the introductory part to the pupils´ problems. While collecting information for the project activities, pupils will communicate with other members of their family, community and local authorities and thus make them indirect participants. After creating lessons, pupils will try them out and then learn through teaching and counselling others. Activities will help all participants to identify problems and help them to understand them. They will become aware of their own identity, different cultures, values and diversities around them. We will focus on situations which are part of pupils´ everyday life and groups they belong to such as family, school, minorities, and discriminated groups in their community. Pupils from different countries will cooperate and work together on each topic. The project will develop their understanding of diversity and increase their self-confidence, communicative and social skills, and ability to work in a team and build new friendships.

Project implementation:

We plan 3 visits to each country and use the Internet (emails, Skype, Facebook, Teamup, websites etc.) for communicating and sharing finished parts of our “diversity textbook”. At the beginning, we plan project meeting in Croatia. The pupils get to know and will plan group work and the topics they would like to work on. Then schools will organise a topical day to introduce the project and ACES values to the community and start project work either individually on chosen topics or jointly on another topics. In January we plan another meeting in the Czech Republic to check what has been done and plan how to continue. Then we will focus on finalizing the project and implementing it – we will use the textbook in other classes. At the last meeting in Bulgaria will work on our presentation for Aces Academy. In the project we will use the tools of project pedagogy, iTec methodology for project work, IT tools for presentations in subjects as Civics, English and IT. We will invite guests and organise excursions. Organizing topical days, presenting project and project work will be the responsibility of the teachers and pupils of each partner schools. Project visits will be planned together and organized by hosting schools. The English project websites will be set by the coordinating school and the other schools will delegate one teacher who will have also the administrator rights and will be responsible for placing outcomes on web. The final outcome of this project will be a “diversity textbook” where one third of work should be done by each school, project teachers will be responsible for finishing tasks in time. Organizing excursions and inviting guests will depend on each school. The working language will be English, Russian, Italian as schools teach those languages.

  Indirect participants:
We plan to verify our outcomes at other classes with 800 pupils from grades 6 - 12. We will inform other 100     teachers in our schools and about 120 parents of directly involved pupils. We will inform school visitors and parents of indirectly involved pupils through notice boards and school websites. We will invite experts and talk to representatives of local communities. For example we will visit a folklore group in our town with the age average 70 years and learn together one dance. This will create a chance to do together a useful thing, enjoy the time, share the problems of young and old generation and talk to representative of Sokol institution. Then we will meet with the youth folklore group and we will learn about their University life and experience from life at the dormitories and then we can dance together. Pupils will come up with their ideas, we cannot give exact number yet.

  Relation to the school curriculum:
Our schools do not have a special subject on diversity; our project is associated with Civics and Vocational studies. Project work will be done also at IT or electronic communication classes, at English classes, and some tasks will be done at Art or Music classes. Verifying of the outcomes at other classes will be carried during Civics or language classes, Croatian business language and Administrative Officer, English with correspondence.

  Extracurricular activities:
Pupils will use knowledge from IT and English language. They will work on the project on their own at home, during regular afterschool project meetings and online with the partner schools. Some pupils will make videos in Drama club, visit Ethnographic Department of the Municipal Museums. Others will take part in excursions after school. Verifying of the outcomes at other classes will be carried during Civics, Vocational studies, language classes.

Intercultural dialogue + educational innovation, pupils´ participation and international cooperation
Our project will encourage intercultural dialogue among schools; pupils are from different backgrounds. Pupils will stay in host’s families; learn about their schools and backgrounds, exchange thoughts, photos, videos and share their problems, anxieties and joys. The working language will be English; we may also use Russian and Italian. The project will promote educational innovation by using Moodle, the iTEC (Designing the future classroom) methodology and IT tools developed for European Schoolnet organisation, for example TeamUP for teamwork. One teacher is piloting Spring cycle and is ready to share new ideas. Pupils will learn how to make a good presentation and share those presentations on web. It will be necessary to stay in touch with other partner schools throughout the whole project and share our ideas and help each other planning and bringing the plans into effect. We will use the Internet (Skype, Facebook, email), project teachers will discuss project work once a week and organise pupils´ communication twice a month at least, more often if necessary. Pupils can plan the project from the beginning; they will share their ideas at all project meetings and the teacher role will be as their consultant. We believe that pupils should express their opinion in project like this. We realize that it will be difficult to pass our leading role to the pupils, as teachers we are used to making decisions for our pupils so we need to learn it too. In the beginning of the project we will do more planning and organising, but with our pupils´ agreement. Teachers´ role will also be to recognise the needs of each participant; encourage disadvantaged pupils to join and help if necessary.

Evalution of the project and the final product:
The coordinating school will prepare questionnaires in which participants will evaluate the events and share their experience and ideas how the event could be improved. Another evaluating method will be an interview-based evaluation. As there will be many concrete outcomes of the project, we will organize an exhibition at the end where they will be shown to other pupils, teachers, parents, representatives of institutions and visitors. Before the project work starts we will ask pupils what they expect from the project and ask them to fill in a questionnaire on tolerance to diversities prepared by school counsellor. Pupils will fill this questionnaire at the end. We will also use the questions from final narrative report.
